Wildflower Rhapsody
I don’t ‘belong’ – not in a garden, on glass sills - not sought after bunched and bundled in these things they call… what are they… flower...shops? how odd. you could just find us on a meandering walk and we would willingly give ourselves if it means bringing light to your eyes for every glance our way – or in the heart of a beloved – this too is purpose.
As I said: you won’t find us in boardrooms next to clipped peonies or smoothed roses uprooted and traversed across seas and deserts… to simply be… noticed, perhaps. one hopes that their shine is felt. I like to believe so.
You may, however, spot us braided in the hair of children or adorning a bride-to-be... otherwise we remain under the skies, children of the elements we are made of. home, I would say we are home in the earth - wherever that earth finds us - the sides of highways and long stretches of tarmac, between cracks and tracks, alongside crop and cattle — untamed, a hodgepodge of shape and colour and length and prickliness...
We hold our own, yet we are recognised in our splendour when witnessed together as one - we, the wildflower clan. I would not say though, that our everyday existence is less enviable than our sisters clipped, pruned, manicured and vased... in fact, sometimes, often, I sigh in relief that I sway with the wind, can lean on a sisterstalk, bask in moon and sun twin light bearers, feel the heavy dew of the heavens... blooming in my mother's bosom... yes, I think I prefer to stay planted in the wild and open, with no other purpose than to brighten the forgotten patches of the world with a coloured luminosity that catches the eye, calling it back to the reality.
Oh, darling wildflowers, do not pine for the vased existence when what we have – the muddied miracle of the mundane – is nothing less than freedom.
